Waterside Houses

The waterside houses are another ancient city in Suzhou, China.  This amazing and picturesque area now consists of  Lili waterside houses, and Zhejiang Jiashan waterside houses. They date back to 770-476 bc and you can almost feel the ghosts of history gone by while you’re there.  What makes these waterside houses are the canals that run through these ancient towns. These canals were used to transport goods as well as the nobles that visited or lived in the cities.

This is the hometown of Liu Yatzi who was a poet and a social activist of his time. He was said to be the last and most outstanding poet of the traditional school in China. Legend as it that he mentored the great Chairman Mao before he became the leader of the Communist party.  Today Liu Yatzi has his own special place in the waterside houses.

There are many bars, shops and restaurants that you can find whole walking the streets of these cities.  Because of the proximity of water, the speciality is fish and rice but be careful, as the food can be spicy and one of the delicacies is spicy chicken feet. Now I know that to the western palate, eating chicken feet seems to be pretty gross and unappetizing.  But, I can tell you from experience that when in Rome you should do as the Romans and try this unusual yet satisfying morsel.  You’ll be happy you did.

When traveling to China there are many options you can choose. You can choose group travel where you can see all the tourist attractions, or you can go by the road less traveled.  We at timeshare alley would like to suggest the road less traveled.  If you truly want to experience Chinese culture and live Chinese history, the ancient cities might not be as comfortable as a five-star Marriott, but will be more satisfying and educational. China is changing very fast in the day and age of technology.  Get there now and experience this incredible country before it becomes more westernized than it already is.

Shanli Lohas

Shanli Lohas is another ancient village in China.  It is about 120 kilometers from Beijing, however, it takes approximately 2-3 hours to drive their depending on traffic.  The last 15 minutes is up a very narrow and winding road. The current owner built the road when he purchased the city.  Take your time driving. Watch the mirrors provided for your to see around the corners. And, above all, observe Chinese tradition by honking your horn as much as humanly possible.

It was originally occupied by soldiers building the Great Wall of China. In 1933 the city was a non armed area.  This meant the Japanese would not allow the Chinese army to go there. This plunged the people of the village into deep poverty and despair.  The Chinese army finally liberated the city In 1938.

In 1942 it was a center of the anti-Japanese leadership by the communist party. Consequently the city erected a health center.  There are stories of villagers sharing their houses with the soldiers.  They would help the red army by using the doors to their homes when there was not enough stretchers. Or tearing out their cabinets to make coffins for the fallen.

The amenities include a Chinese restaurant and a Western restaurant.  The Chinese restaurant is buffet style while the western restaurant is à la cart. At the top of Shanli Lohas lies and infinity pool. It has amazing views of the mountains and the valley you drove up.  If you look hard enough you can even see some of the towers of the great wall of china. It also has its own brewery as well as a playground and petting zoo.

About 4 kilometers up the road the new owner built, you will find the Great Wall of China. The Great Wall spanned an impressive 21,196 km (13,171 mi). All of the Great Wall is not a tourist destination. And unlike the Great Wall we see in pictures, and are familiar with; the majority has not been restored.

Here you can find one of the untouched sections of the wall that offer some of the greatest views in the world.  As a note: I’m originally from Colorado, so making a statement like this guarantees you one of the best views you will ever see.

Experience the Great Wall as you have never dreamed of experiencing it. Walk either direction for as long as you can. Without all the tourists fighting to get to the top and invading your personal space.  Take a selfie with the Great Wall with no one else around. This is a great opportunity to experience and see how the great wall was originally built.

There is also a tent area that will consist of over 100 tents’ when completed. This offers a way to experience what it must have been like to live in the ancient city hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

China’s Ancient Cities

There are many ancient cities in China.  The most famous of these cities is the forbidden city and is located in Beijing. This city kept the Emperor shielded and secluded from the main city and served as city within the city. It’s a giant palace that’s like an outdoor outlet mall in America.  Although the forbidden city is one large complex, it features many individual stores or palaces.

It had housing for the emperor’s family as well as for the hundreds of concubines they were well-known for.  There are meeting halls and palaces as well as elegant court yards. The city served as a ceremonial and political center for the Chinese government for almost 500 years. The Ming Dynasty gets the credit of building this architectural wonder during the 1400’s. It is an amazing accomplishment that took almost 14 years and millions of laborers to build.

It featured amazing rock carvings that seem to be carved from only one large stone as well as cisterns that tourists touch to bring them good luck.

We visited this historical site right before the Chinese New Year in 2012. It was cold and required several layers of clothing but there wasn’t mass amount of tourists visiting.

In China, there is no personal space as we have in America.  Americans have a three-foot diameter space surrounding them that they don’t want people in.  With China having 1.4 billion people living in densely populated cities, there is no personal space.  Walking with their chest in your back or rubbing shoulder with you during an hours sight seeing excursion doesn’t mean anything to the Chinese.  It does to Americans so I have always tried to see these sites during the off time.  There are still a lot of tourists, but as the Chinese say, it is not a mountain of people, sea of people.

At the forbidden city there are headphones that will translate all the sites into English or other languages, so it is not as important to have a translator with you. It can, However, take a day to see everything and to listen to the translations.  Make sure to wear warm clothes if you are going in the winter, and bring all the patience you have if you go in the summer.

There are other options to visiting ancient cities in China than the ones turned into tourist destinations.  There are many of these in the mountains of Beijing as well as in some of the other cities in China.  The following posts will guide you to some of the more unknown and less populated ancient cities.

Shanghai Disney

Disney. The happiest place on earth.  With locations in Anaheim, California, Orlando, Florida,  Marne-la-Vallée (near Paris), France, Lantau Island, Hong Kong, China, and Urayasu, Chiba, Japan there is a place close to almost everyone.

And now Disney has made the world even smaller. By opening a new location with an amazing and large park in Shanghai, China. And it’s sure to become the premier park in Asia.

One of the first things you’ll notice as you go through the gate is the lady holding the sign that says please don’t run.  This is something of the norm in China. I have seen signs similar to this when visiting the terra-cotta warriors and the Great Wall of china.

Disney is new to the Chinese. And all though they don’t know all the characters or movies, that’s soon to change.  Frozen is the favorite at Shanghai Disney but they still love the rides. The TRON roller coaster seems to be one of the favorites of the young in China. And they all want to be first every morning.

All of your favorites are here. Including Dumbo, the Snow White and the seven dwarfs roller coaster, Peter Pan, the carousel just to name a few. There are also many new characters, most Notably the cast of Frozen.  This is in the form of a live stage show where all of your favorite songs are acted out and sung…in Chinese.

And, of course, there is what I believe should be everybody’s favorite ride. And that’s Pirates of the Caribbean.  This one is also in Chinese but in my opinion is one of the greatest rides of all time. Also the language difference is not a deterrent as this ride relies on technology.

One of the most interesting part of this Disney land is the locals that are constantly trying to sell non authorized Disney memorabilia.  From the time you stand in line until you go home that night, locals can be found in and out of the park selling these cheap knock offs.  They also offer to be a guide for those that aren’t familiar with the park.  Although I didn’t see any, I’m sure that they offer guides that can translate as well.

You can also exit the Disney gate and go into the Disney village.  This offers many restaurants including the Cheesecake Factory.  It also includes many shopping areas including the Disney store. there are bands that play in the center of the village and it keeps the Disney Spirit as well as cleanliness.  I asked but it seems that penny wasn’t working the day we were there.  Maybe she was out selling pharmaceuticals to some of her new clients.

So if you’re looking for something. Or if you would like to hear all of your favorite characters speaking Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese or French do your self a favor and go to all the Disney’s located throughout the world.  Each and every one of them are indeed the happiest places on earth.

The China Most Foreigners Don’t See

China has some of the most beautiful buildings in the world.  The government owns most of these buildings and all of the land. Individuals can purchase a home (condo) in these buildings. However, the ownership is a 70-year lease. Even though prices in Shanghai start at one million dollars, no one really knows whats going to happen after the 70-year lease is over.In local tourist areas such as Jingan Temple shown in these two pictures, you can see the building are very well kept and the facades are really amazing. Jingan Temple is in the city of Shanghai.

If you’re lucky enough to own a house in one of these tourist areas, or on a road where government officials or westerners would be traveling, the government spends the money to keep these facades incredible. It’s a way for China to maintain face throughout the world.

So what happens to some of the buildings that aren’t close to tourist areas or the main roads? What happens to the areas the government doesn’t care about, or worse, has decided to tear down but the tenants aren’t willing to leave.

We lived in an area in Shanghai where just such thing was happening,  As I would walk back and forth to work I would notice people were still living in these partially demolished buildings.  I don’t know why I never took pictures of this but I didn’t and for that I am sorry,

I took these pictures in a city called Harbin. It’s a northern city in China close to the Russian border. As you can see the government isn’t keen on these building. They’re in the middle of the city. But, they look like a  small town in the country that’s close to being unlivable.

It’s not uncommon to see chickens or other livestock living in the middle of the city.  In areas like this, you can see chickens and goats living in the confines of the project.

I understand that all countries have ghetto areas.  In a communist country such as China, I find it funny these areas are so run down. Other areas close to them have been are new and remain pristine. I have walked through here a few times now and have seen Audi’s and BMW’s parked out front of the homes.
